Do we sling to much mud in elections?

In my honest opinion, our politicians seem more keen on bashing each other and winning then actually doing their job. Am I alone on this? Should there be more mud slinging? Or should we not eliminate (we cannot eliminate all blind hate), but vow to not bash people for personal gain as much. I understand people may say "That is the rule of politics", but those rules can be changed. There were different political rules before this modern slander and there will (hopefully) be different rules in the future. Your opinion?
