I suffer from extremely frequent bouts of the hiccups (we're talking 1-3 bouts or more a day). Is that bad?
There is no particular trigger, as far as I know. They are usually very heavy and loud, and quite painful, and the bouts last for more than five minutes most of the time. Eating a spoonful of peanut er always succeeds in ending them, but none of those other cures (drinking water, holding my breath, being scared) has ever worked, not even once. My mother says it's no big deal, but I seldom go a day without at least one hiccup attack. After talking to several people who claim they can't even remember the last time they had the hiccups, I admit I am slightly worried. I know what causes the hiccups, and I wonder if perhaps something is amiss with my diaphragm. I've heard of chronic and intractable cases and have looked into these conditions, but this does not sound like either, as the bouts are each their own unique events and not one long, drawn-out case. Does anyone know why this happens to me and no one else I know, and if so, do you think I should consult a doctor?
